Must-Do’s in Mexico City

Mexico City has become such a popular travel destination.

Thousands of years of history at your fingertips, endless pickings for tacos and delicious Mexican food, and all-around pleasant weather are just a few things off the top of my head that make CDMX stand out.

Here are my must-dos in Mexico City:

Hot Air Balloon Ride

This was a huge bucket list item for me. I personally prefer going with a tour since they can take care of transportation and miscellaneous logistics for you and your group. It was such a jaw- dropping experience to see the other colorful hot air balloons in the sky and also the epic view of the Teotihuacan pyramids. The pyramids are a popular day trip from Mexico City for a reason as they are some of the largest in the world and well preserved. I have visited them up close but I think the panoramic view you see from the hot air balloon is truly unbeatable. Be warned that you are going to have to wake up at the crack of dawn for this excursion but it will be well worth the time and money!

Mezcal Tasting

My friends and I opted for an Airbnb experience to make cocktails that were Mezcal-focused. Our host was very knowledgeable about the history of Mezcal and also showed us how to best enjoy it. It was so fun to have a hands-on experience with our friends as we sipped on and trialed different versions of cocktails. We found it to be one of our most memorable moments on the trip and I would highly recommend it for groups of 5-8 people. If you don’t want to fully commit to Mezcal, here are some of my favorite bars around city center: Hanky Panky, Handshake, and Rayo

Visiting local Coffee Shops

Although this favorite pastime of mine may not be quite specific to CDMX, I do think Mexico City has an amazing selection of coffee shops you can check out. They are hip, aesthetically pleasing, and often have a great selection! Some of my favorites include: WO Cafe, Amamba, Nice Day Coffee, and Panadería Rosetta

Eat all the tacos your heart desires

This has to be a ‘duh’ in your itinerary. If you’re not about to stuff a million tacos during your Mexico City trip… are you really doing it right? Some of my favorites include: Contramar, Taqueria Gabriel, Taqueria Orinoco, El Pescadito, and Páramo (photo above).

What you can pass on:

Lucha Libre - Although I did not personally go watch the tournaments, my friends have shared their first-hand experiences and mentioned that the fights seem comically staged. I wouldn’t push this to the top of your list but if it’s something you truly want to check out, don’t let me get in your way!

Fine dining - My friends and I gave Quintonil a try and while I can admit it was a unique experience, the hefty price tag that came along with the meal itself, did not feel truly worthwhile. I would personally skip out on fine dining and spend your dollars on delicious street tacos instead.
